What to Expect
Starting therapy can feel like a big step, especially if you've never done it before or you're reaching out for your teen. Here's exactly what happens, so there are no surprises.
1. Free consultation
Book a free [15]-minute call through my online scheduler. We'll talk briefly about what's going on, what you're hoping for, and any questions you have about how I work. There's no pressure to commit. If I'm not the right fit, I'll help you find someone who is.
2. Paperwork
If we decide to move forward, you'll receive a link to my secure client portal. There you'll fill out intake forms, review my policies, and sign consent documents. Parents complete these for clients under 18. It takes about [20–30] minutes, and you can do it from your phone.
3. Your first session
The first session is mostly about getting to know each other. We'll talk about what brought you here, what you want to feel different, and what feels important to share right now. You don't have to tell your whole story at once. I'll also explain confidentiality and answer any questions.
For teen clients, I usually meet with the parent alone and then with the teen alone. That way everyone starts on the same page.
4. Ongoing sessions
Most clients meet weekly for 50-minute sessions, especially at the start. Over time, we'll check in about how things are going and adjust the pace together. You're always in charge of what we focus on.
For teens and parents
Consent. In Texas, a parent or legal guardian consents to therapy for clients under 18. For young adults 18 and older, you sign up on your own.
Confidentiality. Teens open up most when they know their sessions are private. I keep what your teen shares confidential, with important exceptions: if someone's safety is at risk, if I learn of abuse, or if the law requires it. In those cases, I'll take the steps needed to keep your teen safe, and I'll involve you.
How parents stay involved. You won't be left in the dark. I'll share general updates on how therapy is going and how you can help at home, without repeating private details. Parents can also book their own sessions for support, guidance, or to work through what's coming up for them.
We'll go over all of this together in the first session, so everyone understands the plan.
Online sessions
All sessions happen by secure video, for clients located in Texas. Here's how to get set up:
A private space. Find a quiet spot where you won't be overheard. Teens often use their bedroom, a parked car, or headphones.
A device and connection. A phone, tablet, or computer with a camera and steady internet works fine.
Your link. You'll get a secure video link before each session. Nothing to download in advance.
Be in Texas. I'm licensed in Texas, so you need to be physically in the state during each session.
Fees and payment
Session fee: $100 for a 50-minute session
Parent sessions: $100
Payment: card on file, charged after each session
Insurance: I don't bill insurance directly. I can provide a superbill you can submit to your insurance for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Call your insurer and ask about "out-of-network outpatient mental health benefits" to see what they cover.
Cancellations: please give at least 24 hours' notice. Late cancellations and missed sessions are charged the full fee.
You can see the full details on my Fees & FAQ page.
Common questions
What if my teen doesn't want to go? That's common, and it's okay. Many teens come to the first session unsure. I focus on building trust and letting them set the pace. The consultation is also a chance for your teen to get a feel for me before committing.
What if I don't know what to talk about? You don't need a plan. I'll ask questions to help us get started, and we can begin wherever feels easiest.
How long will therapy take? It depends on what you're working on. Some people come for a few months, others longer. We'll check in regularly about how it's going and whether to change anything.
What if it's not a good fit? The relationship matters a lot in therapy. If it doesn't feel right, tell me. I'll never take it personally, and I'll help you find someone better suited.
What if there's a crisis? I'm not a crisis service and may not be available between sessions. If you or your teen are in danger, call 911 or call or text 988.
